Is your leadership team aligned about AI?

Most leadership teams believe they are aligned on AI. In reality, they are often aligned only on the word, not on the meaning.
AI triggers different assumptions, expectations, and fears across the leadership table. If those differences stay unspoken, decisions slow down, initiatives fragment, and frustration quietly grows.
The good news is that this is a solvable problem, if you are willing to have the right kind of conversation.

1. Different mental models of what AI actually is
Some leaders still see AI as a smarter search engine or a writing tool.
Others already think in terms of agentic workflows, autonomous systems, and human–AI collaboration.
Both views might exist in the same leadership team, without ever being named out loud.
When these differences are not acknowledged honestly, discussions become confusing. People talk past each other, agree in meetings, and disagree in decisions.
Alignment starts with a simple question: “What do we actually mean when we say AI?”
2. Uneven knowledge levels, hidden behind confidence
AI knowledge gaps inside leadership teams are real. And they are rarely discussed openly.
Some leaders experiment daily. Others rely on headlines, vendor decks, or second-hand summaries. Most people don’t want to admit they feel behind, especially at the top.
The result is polite silence, vague agreement, and decisions based on assumptions rather than shared understanding.
You don’t need everyone to be an expert. You do need psychological safety to say, “I don’t fully get this yet.”
3. Short-term pressure makes AI feel like a distraction
Many leaders are under heavy pressure to deliver numbers. Quarterly targets don’t leave much room for learning curves or structural change.
From that perspective, AI can look like a side project. Something that costs time and money before it delivers anything measurable.
When this pressure is not surfaced, AI discussions quietly split the room into “future builders” and “current firefighters.”
Both roles are valid. The problem is pretending everyone is playing the same game.
4. Grassroots AI use stays invisible to leadership
In many organizations, AI adoption is already happening. Quietly. Bottom-up. People automate parts of their work, build their own prompts, test tools, and share tricks in Slack or over coffee. None of this shows up in strategy decks.
When leadership is unaware of this activity, two things happen:
A. Leaders underestimate current AI maturity.
B. Employees feel their experiments are unofficial or even risky.
This gap creates mistrust and missed opportunities. Alignment requires making informal progress visible, not shutting it down.
5. No shared view on what AI is for in this company
Some leaders see AI mainly as a cost reducer. Others see it as a growth engine.
Some focus on efficiency. Others on creativity, quality, or resilience.
All of these can be valid. But if the leadership team hasn’t articulated a shared intent, AI initiatives pull in different directions.
Alignment is not about picking the “right” use case first.
It’s about agreeing on the role AI should play in your future.
So what do you do about this?
No matter how busy you are, you have to carve out time for fundamental AI discussion. This cannot be squeezed between operational updates or treated as a technical status report.
A surprisingly effective way to escape tool talk is to shift the conversation to the future:
How does each leader see the role of AI in this company in three to five years?
What would success look like if AI really worked for us?
What should AI never become here?
These conversations are not so much about technology. They are about direction.
From there, it becomes relatively easy to formulate an AI vision. Not a technical roadmap, but a shared statement about why and how AI matters for your company.
That vision aligns the leadership team, and it gives the rest of the organization a clear signal about where you are heading.
In a world moving this fast, alignment is not optional.
